The car-buying process can be a difficult one, especially if you’re looking to purchase used. You have a lot of decisions to make, ranging from what make, model year, and trim you would like to the extra bells and whistles you absolutely must have.
One of the trickiest things to decide, though, is when you should actually purchase your vehicle. To help make this decision easier, we’ve researched when the best time of the year to buy a used car is.
If you want to buy a used car — or a new car for that matter — one of the best times to do so is in the fall. That’s because car manufacturers tend to introduce their newest models at this time, pushing last year’s models out of the showroom and into the dealership’s lot. This means you can find some solid deals on new or slightly used vehicles, even old show-room models, just because something slightly newer is coming along. There are typically very few changes year-to-year, unless the model you want has gotten completely redesigned for the newest model year. If you wait for new models to be introduced, you can typically get essentially the same car as the newest model for much less.
Another time of the year to consider purchasing a used vehicle is during the time leading up to the winter holidays, specifically Oct., Nov., and Dec. Dealerships tend to like to keep their inventories lean, and they will typically attempt to sell extra vehicles that they don’t want on their lot — especially the used vehicles in their inventory. This means that a price drop can occur, allowing you to save even more than purchasing a used vehicle might normally do.
